I haven't really spread the word about this one yet but I am starting up my own online record label / record store / way to release music called Binary Releases. I'm setting it up to be uber flexible as far as release methods and costing goes but I would really like some feedback from mix members.
I'm building the site using Drupal 6 and Ubercart with paypal for all credit card transactions.
so current plan is as follows.
256K mp3's are free to anyone who wants them with a donate function available for people to donate money if they like the songs. Artists will have to opt into wanting to give away their stuff in this way.
320K mp3's available to registered users. Sort of an insentive to sign up with a free account and to use the community side of the website as well. I also plan to have some members only bonus content that can only be downloaded if your a member of the site. As per before we will have donate functions on these tracks to raise a little revenue from them.
CD quality WAV and AIFF files are for sale for $1AUS per song. These will be fair use tracks so DJ's can play them out without having to pay royalty fees to respective bodies. I may put some bonus remix material out this way if we have big name remix artists. For a whole album or EP I will probably knock 10% to 20% off the total price.
Limited run of CD's. Most likely these will end up just being a small run of cd-rs that we have done up ourselves with labels done at the printers, will likely contain some cool custom art and a heap of bonus material to make it worth while. If I can afford the cost of getting them propperly done and am confident that I can sell them then I will look at doing some propper disks up.
7 and 12 inch vinyl. Kinda super long term, to make it worth while even pressing these up it's going to cost a few grand for about 500 so I want to be confident that I can ship 500 of these before I even think about ordering them.
For each release i am also planning on putting out the remix parts for at least one of the tracks so people can do what they want with them and make their own versions. I was kinda thinking of having a sort of perpetual remix comp going in the forums with these. Also from time to time I was thinking of running remix comps with prizes as well.
I am planning on trying to distribute everything using a creative commons licence I just need to work out what exactly. Most likely the MP3's will be under a CC licence that allows for file sharing but not re selling or remixing/sampling without permission. The waves and AIFs will probably go out with their own custom licence allowing for public broadcast but no P2P sharing etc and also something that disallows it from being used in commercial products that are to be resold (ie videos or movies).
Any way if anyone has any ideas that could help me out here that would be really helpful.
thanks
Dale
