the way things are going you won't have physical media for too much longer. Eventually everything you have will be on a server and you just access it over the web. no lost thumb drives, redundant backup and the ability to access your infomation anyw…

Why are people so scared of creative commons

I have been spending a lot of time on all sorts of sites recently scouting for new artists. What seems to be a consistent theme in all my travels though is just how scared artists are of creative commons. Its really bizarre. On one hand you have the Nine Inch Nails Saul Williams model that fans absolutely love and on the other the absolute pipe dream of landing on a major label and actually making money from it.

Its funny cause I see artists complaining about no one taking them seriously or get… Continue

yeh for open source, and free music via mininova!

Website is finally done! for now I'm sure I will change something again later. Good news is I just went back over every tool I have used from the server hosting the site to the graphics and coding tools has all been open source!

Debian for the server
Apache for the hosting

Drupal for the CMS
Ubercart for the shopping cart
Gimp for the art and graphics work
Aquamacs Emacs for doing the CSS edits

Anyone who says you can't run your world in an entirely open source environme… Continue

$1 AUD mp3s?? hells yes and a description of why digital download is so expensive

One of the benefits of running a digital download store is you can avoid some of the nasty fees that rights organisations charge. As I have discovered this year the reason that digital downloads are so expensive isn't so much that the record companies are greedy its that everyone wants a slice of the pie!

here is the break down in Australia.

We have the following

The Artist: the person that writes the music

Publisher/Label: The people whose responsibility is getting it out to distributors

Binary Releases is live... well minus the content

So a few months of hard work, the total destruction of god knows how many css.style sheets and a heap of testing and the site is now live. By live I mean you can buy things from it. The only thing at this point you can buy though is a 320K mp3 of a Drum n Bass track I wrote last year, mastered and never released.

So anyway if your a content producer looking for a creative commons based store to release your work through send me an e-mail to a&r@binaryreleases.com

otherwise feel free to che… Continue

need some feedback for my new online record store / record label

I haven't really spread the word about this one yet but I am starting up my own online record label / record store / way to release music called Binary Releases. I'm setting it up to be uber flexible as far as release methods and costing goes but I would really like some feedback from mix members.

I'm building the site using Drupal 6 and Ubercart with paypal for all credit card transactions.

so current plan is as follows.

256K mp3's are free to anyone who wants them with a donate function ava… Continue
