i used to draw but stopped and haven't drawn in about 3 years now i want to start again but now i want to do graffiti art
anyone have any suggestion and/or some basic skills that i can use to begin my artwork?
most graffiti writers have a set of things that they practice over and over.. they can include but are not limited to:
a "tag" or "handstyle" - this is your signature in the graffiti world. bad ones look like scribbles; good ones you can read, actually look polished and clean and have nice flow.
a "Stencil" - this is exactly what it sounds like. Stencils aren't as common, but can be an important tool in a writer's repertoire. Cardboard, Paperboard, Plastic.. they can be made out of almost anything, and they are usually re-usable multiple times. Getting up with stencils is FAST.
a "throw-up" or "throwie" or "throw" or "bomb" - this is your bread and butter.. it's usually simple but not overly simple... most consist of an outline with a fill, 3D, and minor high-lighting. it is also usually practiced like crazy... I mean allllllll the freaking time. Simple and Polished, but still looks good.. and you want to be able to do rather quickly - i.e. just be able to quickly "throw it up" onto a surface. Used for speed, reliability, and number.
a "burner" or "piece" - burners are often more elaborate forms of people's throws. they usually involve more complex designs and color schemes, and as such take more supplies and time to create. Burners are where you start getting really creative.. Although throws and tags are creative, they usually will look the same every single time you do them. A burner on the other hand will rarely look like another burner that you've done.. they may be the same letters or even the same BASIC letter structure, but the EXTENSIONS, colors, backgrounds, etc. will rarely look the same from one of your burners to the next
a "WildStyle" or "Piece" or sometimes called a "Mural" - this is your magnum opus. Go all out. Unless you live in a community with plenty of legal spots, opportunities for Wild Styles will be few and far between.. so if you get the chance, don't hold back anything. Go Crazy with it.
BY NO MEANS must you follow these or any other set of guidelines to be a graffiti writer. Don't even think of this as a set of guidelines.. think of it as a loose brainstorm.. you can adopt any or all or none of it and modify it however you please.
Just remember to BE CREATIVE. Be yourself. Put your heart and hard work into your work... Do something innovative. The graffiti subculture is all about pushing limits - whether it's pushing the limits of community standards or pushing the limits of the definition of art in general - OR EVEN PUSHING THE LIMITS OF WHAT GRAFFITI ART IS... either way-make people think and ask themselves questions. Do something original and provocative...
and don't forget - HAVE FUN. =)
