MIX

Zadi and I spent a lot of time the past two weeks thinking about what the next iteration of Epic Fu needs to be and how we can do it. Then we had another conversation tonight and it all changed... for the better.

It seems like the longer we make the Epic Fu web show, the more it becomes clear that there is a vast but disconnected sea of people who have a passion for the way global culture is influenced by what is happening on the web. We tend to be the ones who are a couple steps ahead of our friends and families, the ones that the people in our lives look to in order to find out what's coming next.

We are from every country, of every race, both male and female. Zadi and I have been lucky to connect with many of you, and in some ways, to create something with Epic Fu that has the beginnings of a gathering place to trade ideas, discuss the issues we care about, and meet new people who think like we do.

What we all seem to want is to be inspired. We all want to challenge the status quo. We want to believe that the technology connecting so many parts of the globe will bring us together and illuminate us in ways we can't yet fathom.

Epic Fu can be the point of connection for this disconnected group of global citizens. That means more than just a web show -- we need to build a resource around this community that informs us, connects us, and creates opportunities for all of us. This is how we can all find each other. Zadi and I have been thinking in very one-dimensional terms to this point: make a show, make a blog, make a community site, see what happens. Well, we've seen, and it's time to take the next step.

The new mission for Epic Fu will be to create a participatory network that shows people that their ideas matter and that they have a way to get their message out to the world; an entertainment and information network made of blogs, videos, discussions, and media about how technology affects entertainment, music, art, politics, style, and relationships.

In the middle of it all is the Epic Fu web show, the central hub of the network, created with the input, feedback, and participation of the community, as it always has been.

This is the core philosophy of what we imagine the next iteration of Epic Fu to be. In another post this week we'll detail how we plan to build all of this and what we'll do with the show.

But first we want to hear from you guys. What do you think?

You're right. Lack of consistency has killed many good web projects from shows, to comics to blogs etc. You have to keep people in the habit of thinking about your content and without new stuff coming out people fall out of that habit and thus you lose viewers. Sure the die hard will stay but I don't think you can live off the die hard alone.

the last thing I'd like to contribute to this discussion, for now anyway, is a testimony to the personal effectiveness of "The Great FUnetics Experiment!"

not sure what the plan was there, or where it was going, but it was definitely the most excited, engaged, and involved I've ever felt on the internet. it felt like we were all working together to make some intimate and relevant discovery, but also like we were building it ourselves. those of us active as FUnatics would dissect each clue and scour the entire internet for leads to our collective fate, working together to expound theories that placed each of us as a node or synapse in the giant hive-brain that is the interweb. It felt so REAL and I felt so ALIVE!

you know?

I like the set-up that you currently have but I look forward to whatever it is that you're trying to create.

I think if you're going to create a community where people are to share their ideas, you need to make sure those ideas are shared through an open standard. What I mean is by supporting open source formats, such as ODF and Ogg, to make sure that the community maintains the right to share, edit, modify, and distribute those ideas.

Perhaps you/we should not carve any Oggs, Uggs Iggs into stone just yet. Personally I don't think that limiting ourselves to those particular Open Source formats is a key issue. Perhaps the current web standards are the only standards to keep in mind at this point.
Perhaps the key issues in creating and defining the forthcoming new community at this point are a bit more pragmatic than choosing a given file format, anyway.

I for one would be interested to know what the dynamic duo has to say to questions like:
What would you like to save from the current FU? What are the main problems with the current FU/Mix? What would you like us to do now? How would you describe/sell your plan (or the new FU) in one sentence? How about in three words?

The questions may seem silly, but there is a thought (of a sort) behind them, and no agendas or attitudes involved. Just curious.

Couldnt of said it better. I also think that the community was more active in the eairlier episodes of Epic FU, i have said it before, and will say it again, I love epic fu, but think that it's loosing it's touch. I mean, i acctually liked it better before all of the cool graphics and stuff came around. I like it better when Zadi would acctually interact with the viewers. I think that now, it's like (when the show still aired) that Zadi is just coming on, reading the news, and keeping it at that. Honestly, Jet Set (not jet set show) was more fun of a show to watch, and better active with the viewers.

I just hope they have somthing up soon. I mean the notifications on twitter are fine and all, but I would rather see behind the sences video. I mean the videos could be 2 mins. each, I dont care. I would just like bts videos back. I'm sure they are coming up with something great though.

ah so when it's YOUR idea it's OK! ;-)

Well my thought was the QIK could be used such as you had described - although I didn't actually say it. :)

I played around with it the other day. It's not good quality. The streaming is very bad actually. I'm not sure if it's the video rec. on my end or the equipment on theirs. But I'm very interested to see where it goes, good OR bad.

What they have succeeded at is creating a simple user interface in the app (though I find the site itself clumsy) and made it extremely easy to share the video on fB, Twitter, and YouTube. I understand the frightening aspect of this for sure. :)

I appreciate your perspective so much since I tend to get overly excited about these things rather quickly without thinking about the negative implications or what could go wrong. So funny that my degree is in Radio-TV but since none of this tech existed in the mainstream when I was in school so I'm always thinking what it would have been like to use it then...

Well I have the 2006 80 GB classic & the 32GB iPod touch both sound qualities are great but I must agree about the classic being better. I've been getting alot positive feedback about Sennheiser so I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the info!
