MIX

Zadi and I spent a lot of time the past two weeks thinking about what the next iteration of Epic Fu needs to be and how we can do it. Then we had another conversation tonight and it all changed... for the better.

It seems like the longer we make the Epic Fu web show, the more it becomes clear that there is a vast but disconnected sea of people who have a passion for the way global culture is influenced by what is happening on the web. We tend to be the ones who are a couple steps ahead of our friends and families, the ones that the people in our lives look to in order to find out what's coming next.

We are from every country, of every race, both male and female. Zadi and I have been lucky to connect with many of you, and in some ways, to create something with Epic Fu that has the beginnings of a gathering place to trade ideas, discuss the issues we care about, and meet new people who think like we do.

What we all seem to want is to be inspired. We all want to challenge the status quo. We want to believe that the technology connecting so many parts of the globe will bring us together and illuminate us in ways we can't yet fathom.

Epic Fu can be the point of connection for this disconnected group of global citizens. That means more than just a web show -- we need to build a resource around this community that informs us, connects us, and creates opportunities for all of us. This is how we can all find each other. Zadi and I have been thinking in very one-dimensional terms to this point: make a show, make a blog, make a community site, see what happens. Well, we've seen, and it's time to take the next step.

The new mission for Epic Fu will be to create a participatory network that shows people that their ideas matter and that they have a way to get their message out to the world; an entertainment and information network made of blogs, videos, discussions, and media about how technology affects entertainment, music, art, politics, style, and relationships.

In the middle of it all is the Epic Fu web show, the central hub of the network, created with the input, feedback, and participation of the community, as it always has been.

This is the core philosophy of what we imagine the next iteration of Epic Fu to be. In another post this week we'll detail how we plan to build all of this and what we'll do with the show.

But first we want to hear from you guys. What do you think?

I think it's great! I've been a long time fan of Epic Fu,... straight from the Jetset days. Keep it up! It's time to change the world. Let the frontrunners run together.

The more I think about this the more excited I get! :D

Hai! I agree, expanding further to reach even more people while keeping with the main philosophy's and goals is what we must do to grow as a network. I have a feeling that we may even branch out to newer mediums of media with the rate we are going. Maybe even TV with a partnership with Current TV or something similar in order to see farther upon our horizons, while keeping true to the original epic fu/jetset roots.

I think you are voicing what seems clear to me. People want to be a part of something. It's somewhat like what's happening with newspapers. They need to evolve to survive. Currently most papers relegate readers to the role of consumers, and only a few bright lights in publishing form a a true partnership. Same for television, although it's really hard for me to even think of an example of a TV show letting viewers in to the creative process. We are seeing some movement on this via twitter and I'd love to see a lot more. I think you're on to something and would love to help out.

I think it will be an interesting thing to try. Who knows if it will work but life is pretty boring if you don't try something new. I'm glad I don't have to figure out where the line is between content creative control and public input. But either way whatever comes of this will be something to see.

Yeah, keeping the "voice" of Epic Fu is really part of the whole evolution. As creative people Zadi and I want to make sure that we're still curating and that our voices guide the production, but it just seems so clear that we have to make a big effort to transform what we're doing into something larger and more inclusive. There are so many smart people on MIX with so much to say, we have to find a way to get all of this out there further.

With so much information it is hard to be consistent and open, even with share simple principles and visions, and that I think is the key for growth. A consistent flow, little by little, I would wait even a month to see a new show.****
P.s. I would like, and maybe other to, a challenge in guided projects related to the show.

is there a way to aggregate our twitter feeds into a unified "MIX" feed? other than #mix? who among us wouldn't sacrifice 4 characters for that?

As I was reading this the song from the Carousel of Progress popped into my head.

It's like I always say: "The scene speaks louder than any written word, so I ensure what I say throws more than just dirt". If you keep that mindstate while upgrading Epic Fu, you have nothing to worry about.
