Well, think about situations which are not meant to be shared with everyone on the planet. Nowadays any moron with a modern phone is able to record and share anything, anywhere. Sometimes and some people may not comprehend the concept of discression. Or simply don't care. Sometimes it's good to think about whether or not we should, even if we could. There may be laws, but that's not a quarantee for anything. The damage is often done before any legal actions are being done. Never underestimate the power of human stupidity, along the lines of one Douglas Adams. Or greed, vanity, or some other fine human characters, ftm.
I'm not too sure about where this is going to be honest, some people might not be that keen on online history to be bought up through a stealthily taken photograph =/ .
Jay and silent bob might just get hold of an android phone in that case and search out people who trolled them :P
ok but in all seriousness this time: if people aren't 'keen' on something, why not just NOT do it? if you don't want strangers finding you on facebook, then keep your profile private. this is why these options are available yes?
I tend to believe that truly there is no 'real' privacy anymore...but the debate on that being true, right, or wrong is something different.
Regarding privacy we 'deserve' - It seems to me that the general public has this primal need for increasing amounts of information and entertainment from all different forms of media, and to use them simultaneously, constantly. They want it to also be free and be able to freely share it - but then when it comes to their "personal" privacy they evaluate it as something different, something more valuable. I don't think this is what you're saying here, but this is MY observation of the expectations of average consumers. 'Having it both ways' requires toeing a VERY fine line.
I get what your saying, really I do and don't disagree. But to add... I think there are plenty of consumers out there who are too lazy or simply don't care about informing themselves. There is too little personal responsibility! (not that there shouldn't be balance)
Yes, there's a problem with some companies being sneaky or deceitful about user options and privacy but I think the bigger problem is that in consumers lies a greed for immediate gratification of what they want or think they need without regard for their own *true* needs or rights. Consumers are often the ones not taking the time to read TOS, Privacy Statements, view the Account Settings, and in general look into what they're using. To cry ignorance later about your privacy being stepped on?
i love the segue into our health care industry! (really). i don't know if I agree with the parallel though.
I just don't think we should turn our noses up at or be afraid of developing technologies just because we're concerned about privacy. all we can do as informed consumers is identify when companies are being sneaky and call them out on it. or create more rules and regulations, of which I am rarely a fan...
What I was referring to, was that the way that this "could" move forward, was that people might be able to search for info about any random person through taking a photograph in the street, they don't even have to be famous.
Fair enough at this present moment in time you'd have to sign up for something like that and set what you want to show. That and this is still the early stages. Especially with HTC cameras being so Crappy just now. ;)
When I go out, I'm more often than not at other peoples houses and not really any sort of businesses. Plus the people I hang out with aren't nearly as techy as me so I'd be using it with no one. And I don't really need to play social games like this…
