Just the other day I was thinking to myself when were we going to see our next big break through in the automobile industry. There has been so much talk on what it was we where going to do, bio-diesel, electric car, Hybrid, etc. It just feels like it has been so long since we have seen an invention that changes the way we think about the technology we use.

At least it seems that way in the automobile world. The gas engine hasn't changed for the longest time. Why should it now?

Until I saw this!!

I don't know how i missed this one but this is crazy.

The MYT Engine

At a insignificant 150lbs it is puting out more horse power than a Big Rig Diesel at 850 cubic inches.

"April 3, 2006, Raphial Morgado was awarded First-Prize in the 2006 Emhart-NASA Tech Briefs "Create the Future" Design Contest"

This was a while back, but I never saw anything about this. From what I can see on the PESWiki though they are finally ready to go into production of this engine this year!!

"In January, 2009, they announced that they are now ready to go into production, and aim to set up mechanic franchises to retrofit these engines, replacing existing engines with these smaller engines."

All I got to say is wow. I think they got the name right when they called it the MYT (massive yet tiny) Engine.

Cheers

Bloody hell, that's is an ingenious design!! I wonder if they ran any continuous tests on the engine (ie running it constantly before it breaks or something goes wrong) more to the point they'd need to do a lot of a) design work so that the parts are VERY finely balanced, probably a lot more than a normal car engine would be, And B) they'd have to do a lot of MAthematical modelling.

Both for the purposes so that it doesn't shake itself to bits when it hits a certain RPM (this is known as an object's "natural" or "harmonic" frequency.

As a correction Above I had said they are going into production as quoted from PESN.

Looking further into intial report it is was reported

"Rather than wait for a huge contract to build new vehicles from the ground up, Morgado's company, Angel Labs LLC, finally decided to just forge ahead with a retrofit paradigm. They are looking for someone with $10 million to head up the franchising of retrofit garages that would replace existing engines with their engine. Morgado would handle the production -- something he's done before, with some 150 inventions to his name. The $10 million is needed for building the production plant."

The only engine that has been displayed is the one on compressed air. Although the claim is it was made for gasoline and Bio-diesel but only work demonstration i have seen is on compressed air. I can't seem to find any stress test data either. Which does led to a lot of questions on heat, harmonic frequency and in general normal wear and tear.

I think this is an awesome invention if its all legit.

I just can't help but think why aren't I seeing the stress test data, and why is he still looking for investors?

Maybe its to good to be true, and again maybe not. Its hard to say but he does have quite the resume. I mean wining international NASA contest. Someone out there must have believed him whats holding this back?

Does it just look good on paper? or is it something else?

That looks like a variation on a Wankel engine. And it seems that it's not a new concept, as you can see here. I would really like to see it in a car, on a dyno, and see what kind of numbers it generates.

Overall I think the way things are going are towards hydrogen fuel cells:

this is the UK motoring program making a case for it by their test of the honda FCX clarity:

And it's available in California of all places :P

LOL @ earwax. I have never been a big fan of Pioneer headphones. The last Pioneer headphones i purchased were the SE-NC70S and in about three months the right side died out and the battery life was crap. What I do like about pioneer is the sound q...

Well I have the 2006 80 GB classic & the 32GB iPod touch both sound qualities are great but I must agree about the classic being better. I've been getting alot positive feedback about Sennheiser so I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the info!
