Apparently there are a number of growing parents who feel that it is. There have been recent stories published by CBS News discussing the large amount of sex offenders that were found (and also removed). A large part of the controversy has come from the story of a 12 year old girl who became addicted to drugs and was hooking up with older men. When her parents found it, it seems she blamed it all on myspace.com and how it gave her easy access to drug dealers in her area. So now the girl has been in rehab for 5 months and her parents are suing myspace.com for $30 million. I personally feel that we need to take it back to the old school when parents were accountable for their children. I think that in this litigious day and age we need to look back and remember the times when we use to teach our children 'Not to talk to strangers' or other basic moral lessons, like don't have sex with old men for drugs when you are 12 years old (or ever for that matter). So I just wanted to hear what others think regarding the subject.

Dude you touched on so many topics that I just didn't have the time to get to when starting the post, but you are dead on. It seems that in our culture (American or U.S.) that we have all these taboos that don't get addressed by parents or school anymore.

I guess the best we can do is raise our (future) kids in a good way, or don't have them at all.

Well said.

Kids have too many freedoms and liberties these days.

Parents need to be their kids parent, NOT their friend.

Not to mention that many parents feel that it is the schools job to raise their kids and teach them values. If you trust the school system and its employees, I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I want to sell you.

" Parents need to be their kids parent, NOT their friend. " < -- lol

Well, I didnt get that sweet luxury. My parents divorced and separated when i was around 11 or 12 and they fought a lot in the house and it was pretty rough. Being the last of 3 children ( two older sisters ) it was harder because they were both in college and I was just starting high school : (

Needless to say, I'm the fine young man and on my way to getting my college education too and i haven't had crazy run in with drugs or other baddies online, and I've been online ( without restrictions ) since webtv! and aol 2.0 !

Anyways maybe im an anomaly .. maybe im the " one " haha.. I used to always think I turned out the way I am because I had no other choice, and im glad for it. But yes, it is true what you said frank, but still, its easy to say they dump em at a daycare but its not really their fault. and even with the truth in that, there are still people who turn out O.K. : )

On the topic of the myspace crew, It was inevitable, its the same as your kid going to school and getting kidnapped. Hmm don't send your kid to school? Tell me how that works out =\ It happens now and then and just because myspace is this brave new medium people are afraid.

So lets get this strait. The young girl made a CHOICE to use myspace to hook up with men and drugs, and it's myspaces fault? Did Tom come to her house and point a gun at her head? That's like making a choice to stab your self in the eye with a chicken wing and then suing KFC.

When I was growing up, my sister found older men and tons of meth without myspace. She's been in and out of jail I don't even know how many times anymore. She now lives under the freeway, constantly cracked out of her gourd.

Here's an idea, find out what your kid is up too. If the kid is too wild (or drugged up, or whoring around) sign that little bastards ass over too the state.

Mad true. I've become so desensitized about it people always ask me if I'm kidding cause I'm so blunt. :)

Well I just think it depends on how you use myspace if you just add your friends then it's cool. Even if you add people you don't know and just don't plan to meet them somewhere or tell them where you live you or something crazy there should be no problem.

Well seeing the amount of whoring that goes down on Myspace, it's no wonder that kids are meeting such fates. When requesting to be added by thousands of mysterious people, there are bound to be some bad seeds in the bunch. I would never blame Myspace though. It's the person's own fault for providing their entire lives on their profiles, and having everybody in the world being able to access them. Obviously adolescents have very little common sense when it comes to who their interacting with. For instance, just a few weeks ago, several men were arrested for stalking two girls for weeks in a small town near where I live due to the information they had given out on a local social network (). The girls had released compromising pictures, their likes/dislikes, school schedules, favorite hangouts, and their cell phone numbers. Being a member of the site myself, I know first-hand how little security measures are provided on the site.

In all instances the user is entirely to blame for compromising their safety, and further action needs to take place to make sure they are alright. Parents, schools, communities, and local police need to be aware of the dangers that lurk on these sites.
