my grandparents want to buy a computer and they dont have any experience at all... they want one for their pictures, internet and that sort of thing....I personally use a PC but I do know that MACs have their advantages (esp. when it comes to pics etc.)...but are my grandparents gonna be able to use them or would it be too complicated??
What advice should I give?

The Macintosh operating system enjoys a near-absence of the types of malware and spyware that affect Microsoft Windows users. This is largely due to the small user base, which focuses the attention of malware designers on larger user-base systems. However, viruses as well as potential vulnerabilities were noted in February 2006, which led some industry analysts and anti-virus companies to issue warnings that Apple's Mac OS X is not immune to viruses, as is commonly misconceived.

ok, so now it looks like my grandparents are going to get a mac....boy, will i be jealous....but i want to give them something easy to handle and something cute to look at...they wont have anybody to watch over them during their learning process, so lets hope that mac will be understandable...and if they dont like it, well....then i guess im gonna have to give them my pc and ill take their mac....:-)
hm, about the virus issue...im gonna have to consider that now too, huh.....ok, let me do some more research here....

As much as I love Macs, I would probably recommend a PC for an elderly couple. Reason being there are a lot of adult education classes designed to help older people learn how to use a computer, browse the web, etc. Most of these cover PCs only.

If you are willing to teach them, however, it doesn't matter. My grandparents live in Michigan so it wasn't an option for me.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If you're doing business work and stuff, then go for a PC (you traitor.) If you want to design music and make movies and art, I highly suggest Mac. Or, buy a Mac, then get a Windows XP hard drive and put it in your Mac so you can run both! That's what I have. And plus, windows have the crazy operation text work and viruses. Macs are very straightforward.

hey rick, yes, i was thinking the same thing: i wanted to look for education classes and there are none for mac users (esp. not in an old german town)...hm...but i cannot teach them anything cuz i dont even have a mac (yet!!!....i am working on it though..)...@agent001/7: thanx for callin me a traitor...haha...so with ur suggestion..i would have a mac but it would look like pc cuz of windows?? well, that sounds like an idea...

I really can't stress enough how much I'd recommend a mac for the sort of thing. Grab them a Mac Mini or an iMac and they'll love the simplicity and rarity of having to do anything that has the words Error or Virus in them. I'm got technical knowledge for both but even that's much easier on a Mac. Terminal ftw.
Oh, but do grab them a copy of Windows XP and Bootcamp/Parallels if they want to run anything Windows based.

Seriously though, Steve's parents got a Mac and they are very happy with it. They use it mainly for email, and surfing the web, but have begun using the other programs included. There's something to be said about being able to turn on a computer and having virtually no learning curve. We rarely get calls about fixing things on the computer and not having to worry about viruses is HUGE. People who aren't into the latest in tech or virus protection, or spam schemes, tend to click on everything and anything in their emails... so having that extra level of protection is great and a huge headache saver.

I am severely biased, but I would get a Mac.
