I have to do a Super Video thing for my Cyber Gernalism class, and the topic that I was asing was "FACEBOOK".
I KNOW little about it, I respect it and its mystical powers of communication, but I want to learn MORE.
What can you tell me about it?, good or bad, or something else. Don't care, just let it loose.
Some pray to the facebook 5 times a day. Others make additions to their facebooks from other sources and look at other's facebooks. Still other facebooks try to convert you to their versions of facebooks, and wage epic battles for dominance of friends. There are causes that the facebooks are concerned about and ways to tell other facebooks where they can go @#!% themselves. This makes other facebooks very angry and they form their own communities in an attempt to tell other converts how cool they are. The facebooks allow you to let others know what your status is or what you are doing, so that your friends can see how amazingly busy you are on facebook. In the end though, it is all futile because it will be eventually upgraded and the whole process starts over again.
Man, what sounded like a good idea (facebook/religion) kinda went crazy really fast.
I use Facebook, I have even developed for Facebook. I cannot say that most of my experiences have been positive. It's a great tool for keeping people connected, but it has limitations and the company has a "we don't care what you think" attitude towards most of it's users and developers.
Okay, if I'm going to go over the developer stuff for Fb, I'm going to need a drink, BRB...

Developing applications for Facebook these days is a useless endeavor. Facebook tends to play favorites with some of it's larger developers, okay, that's kind of expected, but here's the kicker, they recently started up a verification program which smaller developers can pay $375 to have their apps checked for quality certification (hence being listed above the crappy apps), however, you can fail this and be forced to pay up again to re-verify. It's an official protection racket.
Next up, the platform has a few nice features for developing for it, the API is pretty straightforward and the control sets are nicely done, but the recent site redesign (which is an abomination in it's own right) not only dropped the focus on apps to another tab on the profile (not a problem actually, this was planned for a while), but it doesn't auto-bookmark apps that you install.
Facebook is forcing users to navigate through a complex series of menus to access their apps unless they bookmark them right off. Their reply to this? The search bar works for installed apps. In other words, they implemented a very non-intuitive feature (honestly, don't you only use the search bar on Facebook to look people up? Not do everything all Google style?) and forgot to tell anyone.
Why did Facebook decide to screw over as many of their regular app developers as possible? To drum up support for Facebook Connect. So the idea behind developing for Facebook now is that everything is transient and that to make money you have to plan on 6 month intervals before they decide to do some other drastic change.
My other big beef is that they tend to change stuff on the platform without telling anyone (most of the time it's small, but sometimes they mess up big time), going so far as to break everyone's apps before getting back to it a few hours later (this happened a few weeks ago). To mention how helpful the team isn't on the forums... Well, you get the picture.
I no longer develop for this platform unless paid to do so. I just can't stand how the company is run these days. I use it to keep in touch with people, but I've taken to just checking messages on my iPod Touch when my computer boots up or I get bored.

Facebook is great for keeping contact with your friends, specially when they travel a lot or move away to other countries, but it's also a good thing so you know if the girl you plan to date has already a boyfriend or not (Just kidding, though that's really a use).
You can also use lot's of apps and share parts or your life with people. The main idea i think is just to keep in touch with lot's of friends and people you wouldn't normally call, but still care to know about.
good going with the build man, I dunno if you carved the stuff out beforehand, but this kinda reminds me of when Queen's Brian May built his "red Special"

Heard a bit of chiptune-age in there... did you get the audio from .XM files by any chance?
What I was referring to, was that the way that this "could" move forward, was that people might be able to search for info about any random person through taking a photograph in the street, they don't even have to be famous.
